night he exposed extreme risk that romney ryan economics would pose for the middle class. he pressed congressman ryan to reassure the middle class their taxes wouldn't go up if they passed that $5 trillion tax cut for wealthiest americans. and he couldn't do it. congressman ryan when pressed about his defense spending proposal flat-out lied about it. the fact they proposed a $2 trillion increase in defense spending beyond the level the pentagon asked for which would explode the deficit. and he wouldn't commit to the 2014 timetable to bring our troops home from afghanistan. and so i think time and time again the vice president laid out the choice for the middle class in this election and was very effective in doing so. jon: time and time again the vice president interrupted, interjected, laughed, guf fawed, that kind of thing. was that appropriate first of all? was it intentional? >> well, republicans like to praise happy warriors. that is what we saw from the vice president last night. he caught out the brazen attempt by the romney-ryan campaign to try to rewrite their kick the -- ti
on paul ryan, of course to keep up the pace and perform as well as mitt romney did in his debate last week with president obama. the president himself even talked about it yesterday. gave an interview with diane sawyer. she asked him first of all what happened to you when you got on stage with old mittens? >> that debate what happened? >> obama: well governor romney had a good night. i had a bad night. it's not the first time i had a bad night, but i think what is important is that the fundamentals of what this race is about haven't changed. governor romney went to a lot of trouble to try to hide what his positions are. >> bill: good way to sum it up. i had a bad night. he had a good night, but he just told a back of lies. and then he was asked what about the participates in tonight's debate. first of what do you expect from paul ryan? >> obama: congressman ryan is a smart and effective speaker, but it ideas are the wrong ones and joe understands that. >> bill: oh. oh. so he is saying don't lower your expectations. and what do you think joe biden has to do mr. president.
and that's exactly what mitt romney and i are proposing. >> reporter: ryan insinuated that president obama's debate performance last week was motivating the vice president. >> i know you're on a lot of duress to make up for lost ground. >> reporter: as for who won, it depends on who you ask. polls taken right after the debate are mixed. in a cbs news poll of uncommitted voters, 50% thought the vice president won. 31% sided for ryan and 19% called it a tie. 56% thought biden would be an effective president if necessary compared with 49% for ryan. not surprisingly, both sides claimed victory. mitt romney's campaign said biden seemed off balanced and strange. the president's team said the debate exposed the risks of electing a romney-ryan ticket. the next presidential debate is tuesday. randall pinkston, cbs news, danville, kentucky. >> if you plan in voting in maryland, d.c. or virginia in the upcoming november election and you haven't registered to vote, you only have a few days left. in virginia you have till monday. maryland tuesday is the last day to register. d.c. it's friday, october 1
. the debates should not be that important. it is their policies. romney and ryan's policies will destroy the middle class. host: what do you want to hear from vice president joe biden tonight to the congressman? caller: i want him to hold romney and ryan to their policies. that is what matters. that is what will destroy the middle class. they are changing their policies and fooling a lot of people. host: how did you see the first presidential debate and president obama's performance? caller: president obama admits that he did not perform well. what they have to do from now on is make the republican candidates hold to their policies and not let them get away with saying anything. host: people are saying the pressure is on vice president joe biden, that he needs to make up for president obama's performance. caller: i don't agree. he needs to put their policies against romney and ryan. host: let's hear from james in missouri, an independent. everybody wants your vote. what do you think? caller: vice-president biden need to bring a calculator to the debate so that paul ryan can show us his b
concerned about, and don't forget, paul ryan was the first test of mitt romney. mitt romney chose him to be his running mate. and so it was very important to mitt romney himself that paul ryan be a credible contender sitting next to joe biden, who is a very experienced politician, and also has been vice president. >> gloria, you've been doing this a while. was that the most incredible vice presidential debate you've seen? >> it was. i must say the anticipation was more for sarah palin for me because we were sort of interested to see, again, joe biden, how he would deal with sarah palin, and whether she could actually stand toe to toe with him. the bar was very low for sarah palin and she surpassed what people expected. this was so interesting, of course, because joe biden essentially had to save the democratic party or so it seemed. and the president had to watch him very closely and probably pretty beholden today, but you have the town hall coming up that candy is going to moderate. >> let me tell everyone about it. gloria borger, thank you. coming out of here this vp debate and head
showdown only days away. new poll numbers show governor romney with a post-debate bump. paul ryan getting ready for the faceoff against joe biden in the next big debate. i'm bill hemmer here. martha has the day off. >> i'm patti ann browne in for mart maing that -- martha maccallum. a veteran political strategist says joe biden will be going for the throat. >> they will be pouring cola down his throat. they will react. because they will have a couple days of bad polling. ryan has very impressive but hasn't done this before. biden who is high-wire act in attack mode which is not always his normal place. bill: joe cola. fox news contributor, good morning to you. >> good morning, bill. bill: you believe this is huge opportunity for romney-ryan, why? >> it is. romney set the stage for the dominant victory over the president in the first presidential debate. that changed the story of the whole campaign. if you have ryan defeating the vice president joe biden it would really create a story of obama-biden on the ropes. and, romney-ryan on the move. bill: the way mike murphy explains it, republic
believe this is huge opportunity for romney-ryan, why? >> it is. romney set the stage for the dominant victory over the president in the first presidential debate. that changed the story of the whole campaign. if you have ryan defeating the vice president joe biden it would really create a story of obama-biden on the ropes. and, romney-ryan on the move. bill: the way mike murphy explains it, republican strategist on "meet the press" sunday morning, democrats could be desperate. do you agree with that? >> they're certainly very worried. the degree of concern they had over the president's performance in denver is much deeper than we even thought. they're very, very worried about that. they're looking for joe biden to come out and deliver a lot of zingers and attack lines that barack obama didn't. this is the second chance in the presidential debate. there is not another actual presidential debate until october 16th. bill: listen how paul ryan explains how he sees vice president joe biden. >> he is fast on the cuff. he is a witty guy. he knows who he is and been doing this for 40 years. s
a victory for the romney side because paul ryan was three years old when joe biden began serving and paul ryan managed to match him. >> this is why i think it is a neck victory for the romney campaign because the momentum is on their side after the last presidential debate, that did not stop last night. it keeps going. i don't think it gathers steam, but did not slow down. dennis: give me a fearless prediction, who wins this election on november 6? >> i'm still sticking with obama, but as i have been saying, romney has the momentum and the battlefield could expand bringing more states in. if you see mitt romney going to more states to campaign and where he is been so far, that is a really good sign for the romney people. dennis: you believe if romney wins it is not good for the market. i had not heard that from very many people. explain yourself. >> if romney is elected, he pledged he would not renominate ben bernanke. the removal of accommodation could come sooner rather than later. dennis: sitting there watching the debate last night, have to tell you the vice president ducking it up wi
and get congressman ryan to commit to positions that may be antithetical opposite to what mitt romney is saying? is he going to try to paint romney with what ryan says at this debate, on medicare, medicaid and on issues like at that? >> absolutely. what he's-- what i'm sure he'll say as well. now romney is talking a moderate game and let's look what you proposed two years ago or four years ago, for instance, ryan's plan, he also took 716 billion dollars out of medicare, and one of the main attack points na romney is making against obama and romney would put that 716 billion dollars back. but, you can be sure that biden is going to say, well in your own budget you were taking the 716 out. so he's going to try to paint, you're exactly right, peter, paint romney with some of ryan's positions not to say they were extreme, but more conservative and more hide line. >> chris, tell us what's coming up on your show today. >> we will have our own debate, alisyn. we are going to have two interesting figures, martin o'mally the governor of maryland and a lot of people think win or lose for obama,
of time in the buckeye state. that's perhaps why we saw governor romney and paul ryan reuniting last night in lancaster, ohio. big crowd down there, about 8,500 jammed into the town square. but there is some ground to be made up for this campaign. polls show that president obama is still holding a lead over governor romney in ohio. but those polls also show that the governor is closing in, within striking distance now of the president. speaking of the president, he also was in ohio this week and admitted publicly that he had a bad night out in denver for that first presidential debate. obviously a lot of republicans and democrats agreed with his assessment. the president said he was too polite and that voters can expect him to see him being a lot more active in the second debate up at hofstra university in new york. back here in ohio, paul ryan's got a big day here. he's got two stops in ohio, starting with this rally a little later this morning, and then he'll go up to minnesota before ending the night in wisconsin. he's expected to take sunday off the trail, little rest for the weary, if
romney and paul ryan. -- it is a high because of medicare and it is a tight because of their romney and paul ryan. >> we would love to have obama come up to that district. guest: i would love to have mitt romney get to that district. guest: i don't think either one of them will go to this district. chris gibson has a good chance and a good independent record. guest: he voted with the tea party. caller: i'm serious that the mad hatter's and the tea party are holding our government hostage. we have shovel-ready infrastructure jobs that are ready to go what we need that money to create good career ladder jobs. the tea party does not -- does not believe in government anyway. they should not be running for elected office. to c $20 million account of money to flip state elections, i don't know if it's in iowa or ohio, this is incredible. they are only allow $100,000 for a campaign in england. host: what about the money? >> we're talking about a shovel ready jobs? are these the same struggle ready jobs obama said he could not find after spending $800 billion on stimulus? more government sp
. god bless him, he fought for our country. romney and ryan, first off, let's get something clear here once and for all, as far as the sequestered cuts go, it is not obama's thing, okay? it was congress and paul ryan's thing because they were too immature to act like grown-ups and make a deal, ok? obama had nothing to do with it. it was paul ryan and congress. guest: i do think that the one of the issues that one of the -- that people will be basing their vote on is the question of leadership at large and that is why you heard a lot about leadership from mitt romney and what kind of role obama is projecting and by extension what he is doing at home in guiding in shaping how we use natural resources. although the polls might not registered significance to a particular foreign policy issue, when it comes to the broader question of leadership, that is part of what people will be casting their vote on. there is an opportunity, as the mitt romney team has identified, to suggest criticism of president obama as a leader. host: president obama was at a fund-raiser in california last night. night. short time ago in lancaster, ohio, mitt romney took the stage with paul ryan of course the republic star on the debate stage last night. he was indirectly ridiculing biden for man otherwise mannerisms. >> there was one person on the stage with thoughtfulness, who was respectful. [yeah] >> who was steady and poised. there is one person on that stage you would want to be with if there were a crisis and it's this man right here. [cheers] >> so there is an example of trying to capitalize not so much on the substance of the debate but the mannerisms of your opposition that leaves imprint with the voters. that's what the romney campaign and republicans are hoping for where in this particular instance last night's debate democrats saying it should be substance add not style. >> shepard: president on the campaign trail and still going after governor romney. >> and substance. joe biden was in lacrosse making the argument as he did last night that mitt romney has ill alienated and put a distance between himself in the 47% who don't pay income taxes about their wanting a governmen

-identified republicans were up in the post-debate polls. the wind has been at romney's back. for sure. the composition changed and changed numbers as well. >> i think, paul ryan's fourth debate since he has been in congress. definitely new to that game. joe biden has been around, 40-plus years in the senate. >> a long time. pressure on both. for sure. >> it will be high drama. one month after the deadly attack on the u.s. ambassador to libya and three other americans in benghazi we were learning more about security fears leading up to the assault. state department documents show the u.s. embassy in libya asked for a four-month extension for a 16-member security team and the team's commander tells abc news, that ambassador chris stevens wanted the security force to stay even longer, past august. but no request was actually received. in fact, a request for an extension past august, it was, never made even though it had been confirmed and it was granted. but they had never actually put that request through. but tragic, if indeed that request was never made. >> conditions in the country were worsening. of

ryan has to feel a little bit of the pressure that he has to come out swinging and be just as ready for the white house as romney did last week. it should be interesting with those two. >> expect them to talk budget numbers and the wonkiness that everybody is talking about. >> we'll see. >>> well, gas prices across the country are still soaring, hitting a national ample of $3.81 a gallon. drivers in california are feeling the pinch like never before. prices across the state soared to a record $4.65 a gallon. you see some even higher than that. a lot of it being blamed on a series of problems, including a refinery power outage. governor jerry brown took emergency steps to increase the supply, but it could take several more days for prices to level off. >>> in venezuela it's another victory for hugo chavez, handily winning and it will leave him in power for six more years. he left his supporters to vote in the street. voting turnout was the highest in decades. some waited for hours but the election was peaceful. >> some people thought he was vulnerable, but he pulls it off. >> apparen

congressman ryan put forward a budget that reflects many of the principles gov. romney has talked about. it was not very detailed. this seems to be a trend. what it did do -- if you extrapolate it how much money we are talking about, you are looking at cutting education by 20%. when it comes to community colleges, we are seeing great work done out there all over the country because we have the opportunity to train people for jobs that exist right now. one thing i suspect we probably agree on is getting businesses to work with community colleges. >> do you agree? >> let me finish my point. they are partnering -- they are designing training programs and people who are going through them know there is a job waiting for them if they complete it. there requires some federal support. let me say one final example. when it comes to making college affordable, whether it is two- year or four-year, one thing i did is we were spending $60 million to banks and lenders as middlemen for the student loan program, even though they were guaranteed. there was no risk for the banks and lenders, but they we
